Writing doesnt have to be a Struggle One ofALOHA Mind Math’s reading and writing students reflects on her struggles with reading and writing and, in turn, is awarded for her writing twice after receiving assistance. Reading and writing are the heart of daily communication.The Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD)reports that high-achieving second grade students will see an average of 18,681 words near the end of the school year, versus struggling readers who will only read 9,975 words. Unless students catch up, each year their academic learning will slow, which could eventually lead to dropping out of high school due to their continued lack of success. In fourth grade Vaishnavi Kota, came to the ALOHA learning center in Irvine, California, frustrated with her essay writing results, despite her efforts to make A’s. Her ideas were plentiful, but the challenge for the nine year-old was expressing those ideas. She eventually lost interest and became unmotivated. Her parents were worrisome. Her mother, Rohini, enrolled her in the ALOHA Reading and Writing program at the Irvine location hoping to see some improvement. After a year of continuous work with ALOHA instructors, Kota’s grades soared from below average C’s to superior A pluses. Vaishnavi feels really proud of herself. I see firsthand how ALOHA made a big difference in her confidence, motivation, vocabulary, and writing style. We are thrilled with her transformational achievements and happy we chose ALOHA for her, said her mother with a smile. The following year, a poem Vaishnavi penned in the Irvine Police Department’s DARE school program poem competition won her two awards, one by the police department and another selected the best poem among all fifth grades in her school. “We all are really happy with her success,” said Frany Shah, Director of the ALOHA Irvine Center in Irvine, California. At ALOHA Mind Math, children in first grade through fifth grade learn curriculum specific to their grade level, state and school district requirements. Introverts are often faced with internal conflicts when it comes to developing relationships with their coworkers, which often cause them to feel they are compromising their values. It feels like a real dilemma, because to some degree it would be fun to occasionally be included with a group from work for some after-hours bonding. The dilemma causes most Introverts to be seriously grumpy. Is this you? I totally know how you feel Ive faced the same issues. I don’t drink and I seriously dislike listening to sports, much less talk about sports. (am I the only one who uses sports news as my benchmark at night to turn off the TV?). Schmoozing I can do but prefer more substantial interactions. Here’s what I have discovered: Drinking With Coworkers If drinking wine or any alcohol isn’t what you do, you don’t need to start now just to spend time with your co-workers. On the other hand, you don’t need to miss every after-work gathering just because they’re drinking and you aren’t. You’re missing out on an opportunity to simply spend time getting to know others better and in a different setting. The important part of the activity is the socializing, not the drinking and when you don’t join in, you’re choosing to stay an outsider. Too Much Sure, some people can get intense about how much they drink and how long they stay at some of these functions. You need to have your own boundaries clearly established. It doesn’t matter if someone is drinking or not, you don’t need to hang out with people who get out of control for any reason. It also doesn’t mean that once you join an event, you have to stay there until the bitter end. (Like this thought? Tweet it!) As an introvert, it may be tough to simply go and be around so many people, but prepare yourself in advance by deciding how long you will participate, before you even get there. Keep in mind that reinforcing relationships is more about quality, not quantity. Attitude One of the things I’ve witnessed with other Introverts in these situations is a bad attitude. The common attitude is “I shouldn’t have to drink with the boss (or _______) just to get ahead at work.” True, you shouldn’t have to but you’re also missing the point. The point is not the drinking (or watching sports or whatever you don’t like to do) it’s about developing the relationship. If you fail to develop relationships with your coworkers, you’re failing yourself and career. While you can develop your relationship during work hours, you have to understand that for some people, that doesn’t work. Others need to spend time in non-work situations to be comfortable and relaxed enough to get the most out of it. We don’t all do the same things the same way, including nurturing relationships. Suggest Alternatives Take it upon yourself to suggest something you’d prefer doing after work. You can even take an informal poll to find out other things your coworkers would like. They may range from bowling to dining, or even hitting a coffee shop. Keep in mind that just like with going to a bar, not everyone will join in anyway. The main thing is that you are taking some leadership on relationship development. It’s All About Relationships If you oppose the idea of developing relationships with your coworkers, you’re putting your career in peril. Studies show that 80% of what will factor into your career success is how well you interact with the people you work with. That’s too huge to ignore. Your next career opportunity, job, promotion, cool project or resource will only come with or through another person. Keep that in mind the next time the group at work wants to do something. 7 Famous Guitarists Who Overcame Setbacks - What Ive Learned Suzy S. Making it as a musician isnt always easy but its also not impossible! In this guest post, Ged Richardson from Zinginstruments shares what hes learned from seven  famous guitarists who overcame the odds   Tired of getting knocked back? Feeling like your time as a world-famous guitarist will never come? Downright depressed about trying to make it in the music industry? Yup. I know the feeling. It’s exhausting, isn’t it? But here’s the thing: what you’re feeling is completely normal. In fact, some of the best, most talented musicians experienced the very same feeling as you. Dont believe me? Here are seven  examples of how persistence and dogged determinism helped make the world’s greatest guitarists and musicians. 1. Elvis Presley If I told you the King, yes no other than Elvis Presley, was given his marching orders before his career took off, you’d think I was kidding right? No, I’m serious! Elvis was told by the concert hall manager in the Grand Ole Opry (a famous venue in Nashville) in no uncertain terms “You ain’t going nowhere, son. You ought to go back to driving a truck.” Looking back, that concert hall manager couldn’t have been more wrong. Someone needs to eat several King-size portions of humble pie. 2. Noel Gallagher Before songwriter and guitarist Noel Gallagher shot to fame in the 1990s with his band Oasis,  he endured a lifetimes worth of setbacks. He battled through family strife, expulsion from school, and dead-end jobs but he persevered with his music, writing three of his most popular songs (including Live Forever) in what he referred to as the The Hit Hut (which was in fact a storehouse at the company he was working for at the time!). Did success come quickly thereafter? Not at all. He auditioned as a singer for the popular indie band Inspiral Carpets and was promptly rejected. Instead, they  gave him  a job on the tour crew for two years. Tour crew! Now look where he is filling arenas around the globe. Some achievement, I would say. 3. Django Reinhardt In 1920s France, a bright new star was stunning audiences in the Parisian music halls with his virtuoso guitar playing. He was called Django Reinhardt. At the tender age of 18, Django got his first major gig with English band leader Jack Hylton, quite an accomplishment for an uneducated Romani Gypsy. But tragedy struck soon after. A fire broke out in his caravan and he was badly injured. He injured his left hand, paralyzing all but two fingers on his fretting hand. For many this would be the end of their playing career. But not for Django, who worked out a way to play the guitar using his two working fingers. He went on to create a whole new genre of his own with Stéphane Grappelli, known as ‘Gypsy Jazz,’ and the rest is history, as they say. 4. Paul McCartney Songwriter and bassist Paul McCartney  is the picture of charisma and confidence on stage when you see that old footage of the Beatles. But looks can be deceiving. Sir Paul was prone to bouts of stage fright, often rendering him useless in front of screaming fans. Interviewed by the NME in 2009, he said: “So I remember being on the steps of Wembley Town Hall, literally getting ill with nerves, and thinking, Ive got to give this business up, this is no good.’” If he can play through the nerves, so can you. 5. Pat Martino This jazz musician  is one of the most revered and famous guitarists  in the industry. Was it all a ride in the park for him? Far from it. Pat Martino was already established as a heavyweight guitar player, but at the age of 36 he suffered a brain aneurysm that  put him out of action. And that’s putting it mildly. Surgery resulted in amnesia and loss of his ability to play guitar. Quite a setback for a guitarist. With dogged determination he managed to relearn the instrument, while battling what he called ‘near-suicidal’ levels of sorrow. In 2004, Martino was named Guitar Player of the Year in Downbeat Magazines Readers Poll. Some turn-around, don’t you think? 6. Bob Dylan In the late 1960s, folk-singing troubadour Bob Dylan was pretty untouchable influencing the Beatles, among others. Or so he thought. When he toured the UK in 1966 playing a new electric sound, it quickly became apparent that his audience hated the new sound! Bob and his band were jeered and heckled throughout the shows, culminating in one resentful fan shouting ‘Judas.’ Did he succumb to the pressure and go back to playing folk guitar? Heck no. He powered through, ignored the naysayers and invented a new form of electric folk-based pop. We wouldn’t have classics such as Like a Rolling Stone if he’d given up. 7. Seasick Steve The American blues guitarist Seasick Steve didn’t have it easy on his route to stardom either. Leaving home at the age of 13 to avoid abuse at the hands of his stepfather, he lived as a hobo for many years, catching rides by hopping on freight trains as he sought work as a farm laborer. His rise to stardom didn’t come quickly or easily, but he persisted and eventually established himself as one of today’s best blues guitarists. He attributes much of his unlikely success to his cheap and weather-beaten guitar, The Trance Wonder. But I  think it was more a case of a spoonful of talent and a whole lot of hard work, persistence, and determination. Conclusion So there you have it seven  cases of success against all odds. It’s both humbling and motivating to learn that these famous guitarists were knocked back in some way,  but crucially overcame their obstacles to come  up on top. The lesson here? Frustration and adversity can help you   if you use it to fire you up. Never give up. If you want it badly enough, you can make it happen! You Need to Be Visible If you have even the smallest amount of ambition for your career, visibility to the decision-makers is critical. We hear about visibility, but we don’t always understand it or think it’s in our control. Let’s look at it and why it’s important to your career: Visibility Goes Two Ways Never thought of that before, did you? It’s important for key decision-makers to have exposure to or contact with you. It’s part of their decision-making. If management or your customers understand what you contribute and how well you do it, they’re more apt to think of you for things like promotions and opportunities. It’s important for you to see what’s going on with them, which is why visibility is really two-way. If you can see what your decision-makers are focusing on and what’s important to them, you’re positioned to respond to it better. It’s a classic business proposition. If you aren’t supplying what your customer wants (in this case, upper management or customers), then you won’t be the one they select for anything. Stark but true. Here are some tips for the kind of visibility you want to get: 1. Don’t Be In Awe Oftentimes, we allow ourselves to get intimidated by those ranked above us. You have to understand that they’re people, too, and they’re working for a living. That means they also want to be successful in their jobs. Certainly, you want to be respectful of their time, but don’t steer clear of them, thinking what you do is unimportant. If it were unimportant, they would never have hired you. 2. Pay Attention and Ask Questions The most prized people (and therefore employees) of all are the ones who show an interest. Interest starts by being curious and involved with the goals of the other person. If you feel like you can’t form good questions, pay attention to what they pay attention to and ask your boss for more insight. Share important things you do that they might find interesting. Not everything you do falls into this category, which means the previous tip is vital in figuring out what to share. 3. Pick the Right Time You don’t necessarily have to schedule time for your share. You can share in group meetings, hallway or for an unplanned office drop-in. Look for opportunities. 4. Share The Right Amount One thing Introverts have to watch out for is sharing too much information. We usually house a ton of good stuff in our heads. When you share with upper management, they can typically only handle the top-level input on a topic. I call this the “scratch and sniff” of information sharing. Short and to the point is what will win the heart of an executive. Visibility is part of what you create when you’re self-promoting. Self-promotion is important for ongoing career growth.
